Unforgettable experience in cemetery

My and Dwayne’s mother had recently passed. I was grieving, so I drove down to Evergreen Cemetery. It was late afternoon on a beautiful autumn day. As I entered the Powell lot where my parents and grandparents are buried, the sun was rapidly setting in the west and darkness was creeping in. After about five minutes, I felt a presence, like someone was observing me. No one had entered the cemetery, so I dismissed the thought.

Several minutes later, the feeling that something was standing behind me grew very intense. So I turned around to look. Standing 10 feet away was a large deer. It was a doe. Her unblinking, compassionate eyes were transfixed on me. So still was the deer, that it seemed unreal—like an apparition starring at me. I was careful not to make a sound or a motion that would startle the deer. This stare-down lasted for several minutes. I kept thinking the doe would suddenly bolt and run, but she remained ghostly still and continued to stare directly at me in a pleasant and trusting way.

Suddenly, the thought came to me that my deceased mother had come to bring me a message from the life beyond. Strangely and inexplicably, these words began to register in the receptors of my mind—as if my mother was talking to me: “Don’t worry about us…” “We are all right…” “We are with God now.” After these assuring words reverberated through my mind, the deer turned and walked slowly away. I followed closely behind, calling to it to come back, but the deer continued at a steady gait toward the edge of the cemetery. Once it reached the woods, the deer vanished into thin air. I was heartbroken. I wanted the deer to come back.

This was the strangest thing that ever happened to me. I was convinced this was not a real deer. A wild deer doesn’t just walk up to a person and stare for five minutes. Since Scripture states that, “some have entertained angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:2), it is highly conceivable that our loved ones can appear to us. Some people have related experiences in which their precious departed loved ones appeared to them.

This ethereal experience is forever etched into my mind. It left me with a warm feeling that both my parents and grandparents are in heaven with God. Until that grand and glorious reunion day when I will see my precious departed loved ones again, I will cling to the thought that our Heavenly Father is taking good care of them… and yours too!

I was born 9 October 1935 at 800 Ball Street in Perry, Georgia.  During those days,  Perry had a basketball dynasty, winning 83 percent of its games with nine state championships, often playing higher classification schools. My senior year, I was selected as Captain of the All-State team, scoring 28 points in the final game against Clarkston High School (a tremendously tall and talented team).

I married the love of my life in 1955.  She was Beverly Davis.  We were married for 66 years.  Because of advancing age (nearly 90), I had to sell my home and property in Peach County.  I now live with my son, Tim, in Dahlonega, Georgia.  I have another son, Bill, who lives near Canton, Georgia. I miss Beverly very much. I have shed so many tears about the loss of Beverly, I don’t have any left.

I am honored to be writing for my hometown paper, the Houston Home Journal. The Managing Editor, Brieanna Smith, is doing a truly outstanding job! She deserves our highest order of commendation.
