Warhawks optimistic about 2016 Season
As the team ran the 40 yard sprint over and over, there was a voice resonating across the field. It was the voice of head coach David Bruce shouting; “you ain’t going to get better if you don’t work.” Bruce pushed the boys to run harder and faster as sweat poured down their faces. Bruce encouraged and motivated them to give it everything they had because, he stated, “That’s what it takes to be a winning football team.” The team responded in kind, pushing with every ounce of strength they could muster. The Warhawks worked on both sides of the ball at Monday’s practice. Defensive coaches Mike Malcom and Nick Brooks worked with the boys individually giving them detailed instructions on various scenarios they may face in the game.
Other coaches leading the Warhawks this year will be Josh Schnhyler- offensive line; Shawn Masters- wide receivers; Stacey Harden and Jordan Clark- running backs.
The success of the Warhawks this season will lay heavily on the leadership and the abilities of the returning Seniors. Kori Walker will have a dual role this year playing both line backer and full back. Kori hopes that he can build on last year and this year will be immensely better. Jaylen Lowder will be on the field a lot for the Warhawks as he will be used at tight end, H-back and defensive end. Speaking on last year Jaylen stated, “I had a fun year last year with a good amount of receptions just wish I could have had more.” Jaylens’ focus this year will be more yards after the catch and improved blocking. Jaylen also stated that he would like to have more pancakes, not the kind that you eat, but the kind that drives the opponent to the ground. Jermal Lucas, another returning senior, will be utilized mostly as a defensive tackle but will also see some time at half back and tight end. Lucas last year was a big part of the team as he held the record for most QB sacks and most tackles. When Lucas was asked about his goals for this year he simply said, “I want to be the beast.” The feature running back this year for the Warhawks will be the talented Amarrian Brown. Brown when asked about his role this year stated, ” I want to help lead the team to victory and make a higher name for Verterans.”
