Robins Air Force Base remembers

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. — Memorial Day is a chance to remember and honor those who have fallen in the line of duty and on Wednesday, Robins Air Force Base took the chance to remember their colleagues as well.

A staple since 1976, On May 24, the 76th Air Base Wing held an Airman’s Memorial Service, where they honored base military and civilian members who have passed away, either while on base or after serving. A bell rang out as each name was stated.

The event’s opening prayer called for comfort and remembrance, then Col. Sergio Rios took the stage as host, speaking on his personal experience observing Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery last year.

While he was there, a group of children learned the importance of remembrance and it touched him.

“To me that means everything that someone has taken time to teach our young generation about what it is to serve,” Rios said.

After Col. Rios, Houston County Commissioner Chairman Dan Perdue spoke at the podium, speaking on the significance of memory while drawing parallels to the Last Supper and the famous saying “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

“Celebrating the life of our loved ones is a unique gift from God. He has given us the memories that now occupy the space where their presence once did,” Perdue said.

Reflecting on personal experience, Perdue encouraged the crowd, saying that God is there through hardship.

“In the midst of our broken spirits, in the depths of our mourning, we can find solace in the assurance that God is with us. His presence brings peace, grace and comfort, especially when we need it the most,” Perdue said.

Perdue added those who were remembered followed their God-given calling for service before self and serving a higher purpose, closing his speech by expressing gratitude.

Col. Rios and Perdue also placed a symbolic wreath before a flag folding ceremony. The firing of volleys, playing of Taps and final prayer closed the service.

In total, the base’s memorial services have honored over 2,000 members of Team Robins over the years. 57 were honored on Wednesday.
